World Environment Day
World Environment Day is an annual event held on June 5th and is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach. It was established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1972 after the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
Purpose of World Environment Day
The purpose of World Environment Day is to raise awareness about environmental issues. This inspire people to take action to protect our planet earth. Each year, World Environment Day has a different theme. This 2024 it was was “Our land.ย Our future.”
In 2024, World Environment Day was hosted by Saudi Arabia, which focused on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. This is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
