A chemical plant fire in Conyers has significantly impacted the local community. On Sunday morning, a malfunctioning sprinkler head at the BioLab facility triggered a fire that sent a massive plume of smoke into the sky. This incident has led to an urgent response from local authorities and has affected over 90,000 residents.
Incident Overview
The fire broke out around 5 a.m. on Sunday at the BioLab plant located on Old Covington Road. Fire Chief Marian McDaniel reported that water from the faulty sprinkler mixed with a water-reactive chemical, creating a hazardous plume of chlorine gas. This plume was visible from miles away and raised immediate health concerns for nearby residents.
Evacuations and Shelter-in-Place Orders
In response to the fire, officials ordered evacuations for approximately 17,000 residents living near the facility. The entire Rockdale County community was advised to shelter in place as a precautionary measure. Residents were instructed to turn off air conditioning units and keep windows and doors shut to minimize exposure to harmful chemicals.
Interstate 20, which was closed in both directions due to the incident, reopened by Monday morning. However, several local roads remain closed as authorities continue to manage the situation.
Health Risks and Air Quality Concerns
Air quality assessments conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revealed the presence of chlorine in the air. The Rockdale County government emphasized that this irritant poses health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children and those with respiratory issues.
Officials have urged residents to remain indoors until further notice. The county’s emergency management team is actively monitoring air quality to assess the extent of the contamination and provide updates as necessary.
Company Response
BioLab, the company operating the facility, stated that all employees were accounted for and no injuries were reported. They are working closely with first responders and local authorities to contain the situation. A representative from BioLab confirmed their commitment to ensuring community safety and addressing any environmental concerns stemming from the incident.
Previous Incidents
This is not the first time BioLab has faced such challenges. Reports indicate that this is the third significant incident at this facility in seven years. In September 2020, another chemical reaction caused hazardous fumes to be released, leading to evacuations and road closures.
Authorities are now reviewing safety protocols at BioLab to prevent future incidents.
