Current Situation
The astronauts have been in space since June 5, 2024. They were expected to return after a brief mission but are now looking at a potential stay until February 2025. This situation arises from safety concerns regarding the spacecraft designed to bring them home. Despite these challenges, both astronauts are well-equipped with supplies.
Former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino confirmed that the astronauts have sufficient food and supplies for their extended mission. He stated, “Yes, they do” when asked about their provisions for the next six months. NASA plans for contingencies like this, ensuring that astronauts have more than enough food stored on board.
Regular Resupply Missions
NASA regularly conducts resupply missions to the ISS. Recently, a cargo spacecraft delivered about three tons of supplies, including food and fuel. This shipment will remain docked for approximately six months, allowing the crew to maintain a steady supply of essentials. The unpiloted Progress 89 spacecraft from Roscosmos arrived at the ISS on August 17, 2024, further securing the astronauts’ needs.
These resupply missions are crucial for long-term stays in space. They help maintain not just food supplies but also other essentials like oxygen and equipment needed for scientific experiments.
Food Storage and Consumption
